Something's wrong-this is where I thought I'd be in February. I guess this is what happens when I work on a film like it's a job. Better to be ahead of sched in case anything goes wrong (like rewriting the third act--which I've had to do on all of my films since '06). But this one, knock on wood, I've had a very specific idea for how it would end from day 1. In fact it was the first thing I wrote.

This shot is going to get crazier. As written above the scene is the usual "clearing out of the desk when a character quits" scene with a different twist: We're going to see him throw his stuff into the cardboard box he is holding without any cuts or edits (i.e., like attaching a camera to an actor's waist). Sort of what Mark Romanek did to Mick Jagger in the "God Gave Me Everything I Want" video:
I think it'll be interesting to see how this technique turns out with a stylized character!

So here is where it's revealed the Boss, Korchin, is torturing his Assistant, Newsom, with a doll.


It cross-cuts to this scene. I'm not sure if I'm gonna have the wastebasket smack Newsom in the face. The gag is already too broad as it is...maybe I'll think of something different. After this point in the story, Newsom decides he has had enough and packs his things. So perhaps I'll think of something more...humiliating that gets the audience to empathize, "Fuck yeah I'd quit if that shit happened to me!" (though it actually doesn't take a lot these days to quit an abusive job)

Coffee. Coffee. Coffee. I've spent half of today animating a guy picking up a damn coffee cup. Pathetic? Yes...
Considering that this shot is going to be one long take (15 seconds), I'm saving this shot for a better day. There's more to be animated on this one; he has to sip the coffee, take in the flavor, and realize that his assistant didn't buy the coffee from his favorite coffee shop.
